Jurnee Smollett pays homage to motherhood in 'We Grown Now'

As Eric and Malik (Blake Cameron James) adventure to foster hope for a life outside of their circumstances through imagination, they are confronted with a predicament that challenges their friendship. Not all the Smollet kids chose to stay in the entertainment industry. Jojo, a sister, works at a nonprofit, while Jocqui's part of a tech firm and Jake is a chef. They are all still close and supportive of each other and what they do. They are so great with each other that they rallied behind Jake on a Food Network six-part series named Smollett Eats. And so if you don’t mess with it, as adults, if you just let them be and let them play, it makes for real great art.

Career

For the sake of continuity, authenticity, and loyalty to the original, the same house on Broderick Street was used in the opening credits of the Netflix reboot Fuller House. The sequel series featured most of the original cast, including Bob Saget, who reprised the role of Danny Tanner. The Olsen twins were sadly the only characters not to return in the new series.

What Happened to Full House's Denise? Well, Jurnee Smollett-Bell Is Still on Your TV Screen

Music helps us escape, so if you have your headphones on all the time, you can transport to a different place, regardless of where you are. It was about finding those ways for her to just constantly feel like she didn’t belong. It’s quite beautiful because it’s this genre-bending, good-versus-evil, dark comedy, psychological thriller, but there’s this subplot of these two star-crossed lovers, and the idea that what Jeff and Lizzy actually build together is the biggest threat to this facility. Because it’s authentic; it’s not the synthetic version.

When asked what she thinks Denise would be doing now, Smollett told Bustle, "That's the question I have, actually. What would she be doing today? She was so spunky, I don't know. But I know her uncle was Little Richard so maybe she took after him musically." There’s a scene where the two boys cut school and go to the museum, and they’re just so full of joy. And then Malik comes home, having spread his wings, and his mother is terrified and furious.

Starring alongside Smollett, the "Get Out" actor also plays a single dad whose relationship with his young son Eric –played by Gian Knight Ramirez– is strained by his personal inhibitions to be present and in the moment. That, yes, I tried to take my son everywhere with me, he’s grown up on sets, like I did. But still, there’s moments where I still feel like “Oh, am I failing?

I love to get in the library and just spend days researching characters. It's a very dramatic story, inherently, and very dangerous. These were desperate and dangerous times, and it really is surprising that no one has done this yet.

‘Kraven the Hunter,’ ‘Karate Kid’ Pushed Back by Sony

I’m a deeply spiritual person, and I think the process of life is the ebb and flow. And I’m also a Libra, so I appreciate balance. Yes, I’ve been devastated by losing some people, but I also hold on to what I had in them, that at least I had them for that time. I’m having a conversation with you about a film I’m incredibly proud about. What I mean by “blood memory” is yes, my people have been through a lot, but clearly we’re incredible survivors because I’m here. I’m drawn to stories that contribute to the cinematic canon in a way that pays tribute to that incredible human will.

Smollett is “appreciative and grateful” that her mother gave her the push. Looking back, she realizes how pivotal her role was for little girls of color around the world. I think my son will not experience that, but I also don’t want to raise an entitled or privileged child, so I very much teach him the importance of financial responsibility and security.

Jurnee Smollett popped by hit TV shows

Even after Anthony said "cut," I still was shaking and crying for a good ten minutes afterwards. Our co-creator and my castmates surrounded me and gave me this hug and let me come down from it. That was definitely one of the hardest scenes I've ever had to do in my life. To go there and experience the level of pain that the Rosalees of the world have experienced, you absolutely get a little overwhelmed by it.

Under the guidance of her acting coach mom, Janet, Jurnee played Allison — the lead character's youngest of three children — on "Sunday in Paris," easily recognizable by her curly hair and chubby cheeks. The NBC pilot wasn't picked up by the network, per TCM, but it certainly wasn't the end of the road for Jurnee's acting prospects or her relationship with Allen. Not only would the icon remain supportive of her young co-star throughout the latter's career, but Jurnee would also go on to work closely with Allen's sister, Phylicia Rashad. By this point, Jurnee Smollett had solidified her position as a legitimate TV and film actor, and took the failures in stride. Looking very much the gorgeous adult woman, the former child star went on to appear in recurring roles on hit shows including, "Parenthood," and perhaps even more notably, HBO's "True Blood," on which she was a series regular for the final two seasons.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell's television career began in 1992, when the actress, age four, played Michelle Tanner's BFF Denise on Full House. Since then, Smollett-Bell has practically grown up on screen, appearing on long-running series such as Friday Night Lights, True Blood, and Parenthood. But despite her dependable track record, the engaging performer hasn't quite had that breakout moment—until now. Smollett-Bell, who is the sister of Empire star Jussie Smollett, has found her career-defining part on Underground, a dramatic series premiering tonight on WGN America.

"There's a generation of young girls, women of color, who have repeatedly expressed to me [that they] didn't see many young brown girls, young Black girls on TV during that time," she told The Hollywood Reporter during an interview in 2021. "Growing up with an image of a girl whose hair was curly, you know, it had an impact on them. I'm appreciative of and grateful for that," she said. It's absolutely going to be part that conversation. It's an example of writers, like [Underground co-creators] Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, writing really complex and diverse characters.

In real life, you’ll find the Full House house — which also featured in the Netflix revival, Fuller House — at 1709 Broderick Street in San Francisco. I love the aspect of imagination and magical realism that the film gently touches on kids' innocence and naivete. And for me, it was emotional because I remember the last time we could be like that before all the other stuff started going on. That's when gang culture took over Chicago. I remember the summer when everybody started joining gangs. But I remember it was a time when that innocence was all we had.
